IEBC: The Bungoma Senate By-Election will take place on December 8

BUNGOMA SENATORIAL BY-ELECTION

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has announced that the by-election for Bungoma's Senate seat will now be held on December 8, 2022. (IEBC).

This is because the position of National Assembly speaker was vacant as a result of Moses Wetangula's appointment on September 8, 2022.

The same day will also see five other by-elections for the Ololmasani, Kyome/Thaana, Utawala, Mumias North, and South Gem Wards in the Narok, Kitui, Nairobi City, Kakamega, and Siaya County Assemblies, respectively. This was announced by IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati in a statement to newsrooms on Thursday.

The commission further ruled that all political parties intending to field candidates in the by-elections must do so by October 13 at the latest.

In by-elections, candidates are permitted to run campaigns. These campaigns must start as soon as a candidate is nominated and must end 48 hours prior to the by-election day on Tuesday, December 6.

According to IEBC, the campaign hours during the period should be from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Before nomination days, candidates should verify their information and give the necessary credentials to their respective Returning Officers.

A portion of the statement stated, "All candidates who had been given the go-ahead to run for office prior to the 9th August General Election to verify their details and documents with the respective Returning Officer on or before the nomination days."

By Monday, November 21, 2022, the Commission must resolve any disputes arising from the nominations within ten days of the dispute being filed.

The commission must receive the names of political parties' and independent candidates' county, constituency, and polling place agents by November 24.

However, it has been advised that all candidates and political parties abide by the Electoral Code of Conduct because anyone found guilty of an election offense will face penalties outlined in the Elections Act.
